Contribution to the study of antimicrobial prophylaxis in third molar extraction surgeries

ABSTRACT The use of antibiotic prophylaxis in the extraction third molars is extremely controversial, raising several discussions about most appropriate clinical protocol to avoid postoperative complications. To review literature on subject, describing evidence for and against prevent surgical site infections molar extractions, besides establishing a prophylactic dosage regimen. A was carried out analyzing scientific from articles PubMed Scielo platforms by searching descriptors “antibiotic therapy infection surgery”, “antimicrobial infective endocarditis”, adverse effects”, dentistry”, “surgical time incidence extractions”, including original double or triple blind randomized trials, Portuguese English, published between 1980 2021, separated chronological order. There no consensus indication antimicrobial prophylaxis, but factors as surgeon’s skill, elapsed during procedure patient’s general health status directly affect severity infections. Among all analyzed this study, it possible infer that topic still questionable and, therefore, essential conduct new experimental studies obtain more conclusive data subject.
